Because baggage must be transferred into individual totes with fixed dimensions, bag size and orientation become important factors during loading. Long or irregularly shaped baggage may require repositioning before it can be successfully loaded. As a result, many ICS installations include dedicated manual reloading stations to manage bags that cannot be automatically transferred into a tote. This additional handling step can increase system complexity, capital investment and maintenance requirements.

Conveyor-Based Storage

Baggage is stored on conveyor loops or accumulation conveyors before being released when required. Conveyor-based systems can be an effective solution where storage requirements are lower, existing infrastructure can be utilised, or airports have building height restrictions that make high-density automated storage impractical.

Dynamic Buffer Storage

Rather than using dedicated storage, some systems temporarily buffer baggage within the overall baggage handling network, allowing flow to be balanced across the system.
