Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport BHS Upgrade & BAGXONE AGV

Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport - BHS Upgrade and BAGXONE AGV

Alstef Group delivered a major baggage handling system upgrade at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in Serbia, modernising the airport's baggage handling infrastructure while maintaining airport operations.

About this Project

  • Customer: VINCI AIrports
  • Airport: Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport
  • Location: Belgrade, Serbia
  • Scope: BHS upgrade
  • Completed: 2024

Awarded by VINCI in December 2021, the project was delivered in multiple phases, completing the baggage handling system for the new Terminal 2 while establishing vital connections with the existing Terminal 1 system.

A key feature of the project was the operational deployment of BAGXONE, Alstef Group's automated guided vehicle (AGV) designed specifically for airport baggage handling applications. The AGV provides seamless connectivity between the screening reconciliation zone and the departures make-up carousels and, when required, can also transfer baggage to the baggage destruction zone.

Scope of Works

The project included:

  • Construction and commissioning of the baggage handling system for the new Terminal 2.
  • Integration between the existing Terminal 1 and new Terminal 2 baggage systems.
  • Installation of BAGXONE AGV.
  • Installation of check-in conveyors and counters.
  • Outbound screening systems.
  • Carousel-based sortation systems.
  • Make-up carousels.
  • Out-of-gauge baggage handling.
  • Dedicated transfer conveyor line.
  • BAGWARE software providing Sortation Allocation Control (SAC) and SCADA

BAGXONE AGV Integration

A significant innovation within the project was the integration of BAGXONE.

During the design phase, space constraints made it difficult to install conventional fixed conveyor routes for low-volume baggage transfers between the screening reconciliation zone and the departures make-up carousels. BAGXONE provided an efficient alternative, enabling flexible baggage transport while avoiding the need for additional fixed conveyor infrastructure.

The commissioning of BAGXONE demonstrates how automated guided vehicle technology can provide flexible baggage handling solutions where traditional conveyor systems are constrained by available space.

Multi-Phase Delivery

Construction commenced in June 2022 and was delivered in multiple phases.

The first phase focused on the southern area of Terminal 2, including check-in facilities, outbound screening and sortation systems, make-up carousels, out-of-gauge handling and roller tables.

The second phase expanded the baggage handling system into the northern area of Terminal 2, adding further check-in conveyors, outbound screening equipment, carousel-based sortation systems and an additional make-up carousel.

A third phase established a two-way connection between Terminals 1 and 2 through the installation of 50 conveyors, while the final departures phase delivered a dedicated transfer line comprising 13 conveyors for efficient baggage transfers.

BAGWARE Software

The complete baggage handling system is controlled by Alstef Group's proprietary BAGWARE software suite, providing Sortation Allocation Control (SAC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) to manage baggage routing, monitoring and system control across the airport

Project Outcomes

The completed project provides Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport with:

  • A modern baggage handling system supporting Terminal 2.
  • Integrated baggage handling between Terminals 1 and 2.
  • Flexible baggage transfers using BAGXONE AGV technology.
  • Efficient transfer baggage handling through a dedicated transfer line.
  • Centralised control through BAGWARE software
