With a 4.3% increase in passenger traffic in 2018, Marseille-Provence Airport continues to carry out its investment plan to support its growth and welcome the 11 million passengers expected in 2025.

Terminal 1 has been reorganized around a “core terminal” that will connect Halls 1, 2, 3 and 4 and will centralize all operational functions. Marseille-Provence Airport chose Alstef to redesign its baggage handling system. The core of the system is fully redundant and comprises two cross-belt sorters, each 650 meters long, with a total sorting capacity of 12,000 baggage per hour, to connect the various functional areas, ensure the security function, the storage of baggage in advance, and the automatic sorting by flight.
Hold baggage screening is performed by standard 3 screening machines.
A single check-in area with 82 banks facilitates traffic flow and reduces operating costs. Inbound baggage is delivered via 6 arrival carousels.

This new system is to be controlled by the BAGWare software suite developed by Alstef, with particular attention paid to the information systems security. After a preparatory work phase in 2020, the new equipment installation will be carried out gradually so as not to disrupt the airport’s operations. Completion is scheduled for 2023.

Following a successful tender for the hold baggage sorting system overhaul in Terminal 1, Alstef has also been awarded two contracts for the maintenance of the baggage sorting facilities of the two terminals of Marseille Airport until 2028.

A first maintenance contract is associated with Terminal 1 sorting system overhaul and will be implemented gradually following the commissioning of the different phases of the project. The second contract will cover the maintenance of the existing installations of Terminal 1 and Terminal MP2 dedicated to low-cost airlines.

Alstef’s objective will be to ensure maintenance continuity of the 2 terminals installations while supporting at the same time the progressive shift of the flow from the old sorting system in Terminal 1 to the new system and guaranteeing the proper functioning and operation of the airport’s facilities. Alstef has deployed a maintenance team on-site to guarantee preventive and corrective maintenance services. A hotline has also been implemented to complete the system.
