Aéroport de Mayotte
As part of the airport expansion programme led by concessionaire EDEIS, Alstef Group was awarded the contract in late 2021 to modernise and expand the outbound baggage handling system. The project has two key objectives: to meet European security standards and to increase operational capacity.

Background
Alstef Group has maintained a long-standing partnership with Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi International Airport. In 2013, the group installed the airport’s baggage handling system for the terminal.
As part of the airport expansion programme, EDEIS once again entrusted Alstef Group with the modernisation of the outbound baggage handling system. The project was designed to meet European security requirements while supporting future passenger traffic growth.
Project Scope
- New check-in islands and a transfer line
- Screening system integrating a Standard 3 EDS machine
- Extension of the sortation carousel
- Functional upgrades and increased system capacity to support future operational needs
Challenges
Delivering the project on a remote island in the Indian Ocean presented several challenges, including:
- Delays related to infrastructure preparation, impacting the project schedule
- Water shortages affecting teams and logistics operations
- Industrial action and the rare occurrence of Cyclone Chido, disrupting operations
- Additional training and support requirements for a newly formed installation team
- Replacement of the EDS machine during the project, requiring redesign and revalidation work
Despite these challenges, the teams demonstrated strong adaptability. Working closely with the client, the project was carefully phased to minimise operational disruption throughout implementation.
Community Impact
Following the impact of Cyclone Chido, Alstef Group launched the Step Up for Mayotte solidarity initiative. The fundraising campaign supported local associations and helped strengthen ties with the island community.
Results
Since June 2024, the new outbound baggage handling system has been fully operational. The project has enabled the airport to:
- Increase capacity to accommodate future passenger growth
- Enhance security through the integration of a Standard 3 EDS screening system
- Deliver a modernised, high-performance system ready to support the airport’s next phase of development
