Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport; Terminals 2B & 2D
Roissy-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) is the largest airports in France and one of the busiest in Europe, welcoming millions of passengers each year.
About this Project
- Location: Paris – Roissy Charles de Gaulle (France)
- Alstef Group was awarded the contract for Terminal 2B in 2017 and Terminal 2D in 2021
The transformation of Terminals 2B and 2D at CDG is part of a program aimed at enhancing the passenger experience and ensuring compliance with the latest security requirements.
The project began with the renovation of the departure and arrival systems at Terminal 2B, with Alstef Group’s teams working on-site since March 2019. The extensive works were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Terminal 2B finally reopened to the public in June 2021. As part of this transformation, a connecting building, known as BD, was created to link Terminal 2D. This new structure enables better integration between the two terminals and provides shared arrival system to enhance efficiency and convenience for travelers.
Alstef Group proposed a solution that met essential criteria such as redundancy capacity, ease of operation and maintainability, and compliance with economic and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) requirements.
For Terminal 2B, Alstef Group’s solution includes 50 check-in banks, four routing feeding lines, an out-of-gauge non-standard line with a discontinuous elevator, three Standard 3 EDS machines, and an additional control machine. Departure sorting is handled by a sortation carousel and two make-up carousels. Arrivals are equipped with five feeding lines in a restricted area, feeding five carousels for standard-sized luggage, and one oversize line.
For Terminal 2D, the baggage handling system was planned in two main phases, spanning a total of 34 months. The first phase, commissioned in May 2022, allowed enough capacity in regards to the resumption of air traffic. The complete system comprises 50 check-in banks, an automated sorting system to two carousels for standard-sized luggage and out-of-gauge. For both Terminals, the contract also includes platforms, lighting, all ground and vertical signage, full building electrical works, and a control, supervision, and computer ensemble.
Improved Baggage Processing Capacity:
Terminals 2B and 2D now have a high processing capacity, handling up to 1800 bags per hour for departures, ensuring efficient baggage management. The inbound system has an even higher capacity, processing up to 6000 bags per hour upon arrival, ensuring rapid retrieval by passengers. These two newly renovated terminals can accommodate up to 5.5 million travelers annually.
Alstef Group goes beyond implementing high-performing baggage sorting systems; they also provide maintenance and ongoing technical support to ensure the proper functioning of the facilities. This ensures the availability and reliability of the systems, minimizing downtime and potential disruptions.
Alstef Group’s long-standing relationship with Groupe ADP demonstrates its expertise and commitment to customer satisfaction. After five years of work, Terminal 2D reopened to passengers in April 2023, marking a crucial step in successfully transforming the airport’s infrastructure.
